Mirena and IUD insertion

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a small contraceptive device placed inside the uterus.

There are two kinds of IUDs. The copper IUD is a small plastic device with copper wrapped around its stem. The progestogen IUD (Mirena) is a small T-shaped device with a cylinder containing progestogen around its stem.

The IUD affects sperm movement and survival in the uterus (womb) so they cannot reach the egg to fertilize it. The IUD also changes the lining of the womb (endometrium), making it unsuitable for pregnancy, and prevents a fertilized egg from developing.

Benefits

  • Effective long-term contraception (for at least five years)

  • Easy to maintain; you can't forget to use it as you might with the Pill

  • Long-term, it is cheaper than other contraception

  • You can try for pregnancy as soon as it is removed

The progestogen IUD used at INMC has the added benefit of reducing menstrual bleeding, which is helpful for women who normally have heavy or long-lasting periods or who experience heavier or longer-lasting periods with the copper IUD.

Inhaled pain relief is available if required.

A consultation with the doctor is required before booking for IUD insertion to discuss options, risks, and benefits.
