If you are diagnosed with Diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) you can discuss with your GP completing a GP Management Plan (also known as a GP Care plan) that allows you to access 5 subsidised Allied Health visits under Medicare. This can help with accessing Allied Health specialists that are important in your care, including Diabetes Educators, Dieticians & Podiatrists & more.
Your GP can also help coordinate your Fitness to Drive Medical Assessment.
Differences Between Type 1, Type 2 & Gestational Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune condition resulting in the body being unable to produce the hormone that lowers blood sugar levels. Its most commonly diagnosed in children and young adults, but can occur at any age. Type 1 Diabetes is often treated by a Diabetes specialist (Endocrinologist), and involves a combination of lifestyle management or medication via injections or a pump. It is also important to have a General Practitioner coordinating your care and managing your health in-between specialist appointments.
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition of resistance where the hormones being made do not work well, causing high blood sugar. This can be hereditary, but is also contributed to by lifestyle i.e. weight gain, poor diet. Type 2 Diabetes is often treated by GP’s and treatment involves a combination of lifestyle change and medication.
Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes require regular screening to ensure that complications from diabetes are not developing (kidneys, feet, eyes, heart and blood vessels). Your INMC GP can co-ordinate this.
Gestational Diabetes occurs as a result of pregnancy and generally resolves once the baby is born. All pregnant women have screening for Gestational Diabetes and, if positive, this involves careful monitoring, lifestyle change and sometimes medication.
