Hey Dr. Dan, Could you share some details about your background and your journey into Sports Medicine?

I grew up loving sports and played a lot, including basketball, hockey, and footy. Childhood injuries sparked my interest in physiotherapy. After high school I decided to dive right in undertaking a physio degree whilst working at a footy club. Eventually, I transitioned to medicine.

During my medical degree, I worked as a physio at Western Hospital and later became the head doctor for the Western Bulldogs Women’s team for four seasons. I still occasionally work with the AFL, monitoring concussions and assisting in sporting emergencies.

What led to you specialise in Sports Medicine, what’s unique about this area of medicine?

I have always loved sports and helping people stay active. Even if you're injured, it's crucial to find ways to remain active for your overall health. I also enjoy assisting people in returning to team sports, as it's such an important aspect of both physical and mental well-being.

What types of sports-related injuries do you most commonly treat?

I typically see two main types of sports injuries. The first are overuse injuries, such as tendon issues and running-related injuries, often from excessive workouts. The second type are acute injuries, like ankle sprains or shoulder injuries. Given the popularity of soccer, netball, and footy in Melbourne, I frequently treat acute injuries, especially ankle sprains.

What can people expect when they come to see you for a sports-related injury?

One of the most important things I work out together with patients is to find out what their goals are. We decide on how within the constraints of their life, we can realistically get them back to where they want to be (people can get so busy, if they have kids, etc), so the recovery process looks different to everyone. We focus on getting on top of their pain but also the rehab component, to return their function to what they want to do as quickly as possible. And trying to make sure it fits in with their life.

Is there anything else you offer?

I am fortunate to have an ultrasound machine in my room, which has inspired me to complete a diploma in musculoskeletal ultrasound. This means we can use ultrasound as part of the patient's assessment in real time, which I have found to be extremely helpful. It also allows us to monitor certain conditions as patient's progress through their rehab and return to exercise or sport.

Dan will is opening his sports medicine clinic at the new EBV building, 6 Bluestone Way.
